Introduction

From its construction to its inauguration, the Château de Maisons reveals all its secrets! Pupils discover the role of an architect in the 17th century through the work of François Mansart and learn about the different stages of a building project. By reading plans, examining scale models and exploring the rooms, classical architecture (symmetry, balanced proportions, ancient ornamentation) will hold no more mysteries for them!

Key concepts:

  •  Analyse the architectural composition of the Château de Maisons by applying the concepts of symmetry, angles and proportions to characterise the French classical style
  • Calculate and compare the dimensions, areas and volumes of the spaces visited by applying the appropriate units and measurement formulas
  • Reconstruct the main stages of a 17th-century building project by identifying the architect’s role and the technical, mathematical and aesthetic constraints that shape the design of a classical monument
